Libertarians for Ron Paul » Libertarian Party
Shane Cory, Executive Director of The Libertarian Party, explains the resolution by the Libertarian National Committee which commended the Ron Paul campaign:
“Partisanship is why they are corrupt. The Republican and Democratic parties exist to maintain their own power…that’s about it.”
“We exist for liberty.”
“With integrity in our lives and in our organization, Libertarians have fought with long odds for more than three decades. We battle Republicans and Democrats who betray our principles of peace and freedom.”“But now, we have a man of principle who is igniting a fire of liberty across the nation and, go figure, he has an “R” next to his name. So, what do we do? To some, this appears to be a black-or-white issue with only two options:
Do we stubbornly stand by and pretend Ron Paul does not exist?
Or . . .
Do we throw out 36 years of work, violate our own bylaws and principles, and convert to the Republican Party and join Dr. Paul?”
“Both of those are obviously horrible non-options.”
“What we can do is show respect for our Party’s history, bylaws and members while making an effort to recognize the revolution that’s taking place around the country.”

The Libertarian Party condemns the use of torture by the U.S. government in the War on Terror. This has become an issue during the confirmation hearings for the Attorney-General nominee.
“In a civilized society that values the sanctity of life, torture should not be permitted in any way, shape, or form. The United States should set the standard for how the world treats captured prisoners. We should not lower ourselves down to the depraved levels of the terrorists who attacked us on 9/11. Torture is disgusting, abhorrent and beyond every moral standard of Western civilization.”

The Libertarian Party has criticized the Bush administration’s new sanctions on Iran, saying the sanctions only worsen an already delicate situation. Libertarian Party Executive Director Shane Cory says “the United States should pursue more dialogue and less saber-rattling when dealing with Iran.”
“The recent sanctions of the Bush administration on Iran indicate the United States is preparing for a war with a country it knows very little about,” Cory continues. “The talk of a potential ‘World War III’ and other harsh threats President Bush has used against Iran are extremely similar to the lead-up to the invasion of Iraq. The last thing the United States needs is another war. Nothing has been worse for the national security of America than Bush’s aggressive foreign policy in the Middle East.”

“In the start of what could be a major setback for the Bush administration, a Federal judge ruled yesterday that portions of the Patriot Act were unconstitutional. U.S. District Judge Ann Aiken ruled the government had violated Oregon attorney Brandon Mayfield’s constitutional rights after conducting warrantless surveillance using powers granted in the controversial 2001 USA Patriot Act. ”

The Libertarian Party rejects President Bush’s claims that the “Protect America Act” needs to be made permanent, citing that the bill fails to live up to its name and only limits American civil liberties. The controversial Act that was passed by Congress last August altered the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) and legalized the Bush administration’s warrantless wiretap program, which many civil liberties organizations had strongly protested. “Every American should be fundamentally opposed to the ‘Protect America Act,’” says Shane Cory, executive director of the Libertarian Party. “Despite its catchy name, the Act does nothing of the sort.”

Sen. Hillary Clinton’s recent healthcare plan is a flawed strategy that “fails to meet the basic requirements of pragmatic reform” says the Libertarian Party after Clinton announced her second attempt at universal healthcare policy. “Clinton’s healthcare plan is the wrong approach to healthcare reform both on a logistical and moral level,” says Executive Director of the Libertarian Party, Shane Cory. “Clinton’s plan is simply a new prescription for ‘Hillary Care’ that she prescribed more than a decade ago. It wasn’t good then, and it isn’t good now.”

The Libertarian Party responded with skepticism to President Bush’s press conference on Progress in Iraq.
“We strongly deplore President Bush’s comments today at his press conference,” says Shane Cory, Executive Director of the LNC. “We have been hearing this same rhetoric since the occupation of Iraq began over four years ago, with no results to be seen. However ‘clear’ the objectives Bush has given to our troops may be, it won’t change the fact that this unnecessary war in Iraq has done more damage than good, and the goals Bush laid out today are too vague for our troops to meet.”
“We are on the path that, within a year, our nation will suffer more than 4,000 casualties in Iraq,” Cory continues. “But what do we have to show for it? We have the Iraqi government failing to meet even the most basic benchmarks necessary for them to begin taking control of their own country.

As the casualties in Iraq continue to mount, and American support of the war continues to dissipate, the Libertarian Party of the United States demands President Bush immediately begin withdrawing from Iraq, and not ‘in a while.’ “So far this month, 28 American troops have died in Iraq while the Iraqi government failed to take action, and support from the American public reached an all-time low,” says Shane Cory, Executive Director of the Libertarian National Committee…
