Ron Paul Rules Out 3rd Party Run, Scales Down Campaign

Ron Paul has announced that he is scaling down his campaign and, has absolutely ruled out a third-party Presidential run. He plans to focus on his reelection to Congress. He faces a March 4 primary challenge in his home district.

For the first time, Paul left no wiggle-room in addressing the third-party question:

Of course, I am committed to fighting for our ideas within the Republican party, so there will be no third party run. I do not denigrate third parties – just the opposite, and I have long worked to remove the ballot-access restrictions on them. But I am a Republican, and I will remain a Republican.

Thank you, Dr. Paul, for a great effort.

I am disappointed that Ron Paul will not seek the Libertarian Party nomination. He could give us an opportunity to vote for him in November and to bolster the LP, the membership of which has been promoting these ideas for over 30 years.

If Ron Paul does not win a significant number of delegates to be a contender for the Republican nomination, before the Libertarian Party’s National Convention in May, I hope he will reconsider seeking the LP nomination. Running on the LP ticket has several advantages, the most significant being more accessible ballot access.

Paul could then announce during a nationally televised interview that the Republican Party clearly is an opponent to limited government, individual liberty, a truly free-market, and a peaceful, noninterventionist foreign policy and he is rescinding his membership and joining the LP, also encouraging his supporters to do the same.

It would benefit America, if Ron Paul was to continue delivering the liberty message through the General Election in November, especially if he gets to participate in the Presidential Debates. It would also benefit the LP if he increased membership, activism, national attention and gave it more credibility. We all believe that Paul’s campaign was a major boost to the liberty movement and that it will grow even more from here. I think it best to continue with this effort on the shoulders of 30+ years of Libertarian Party efforts.
