Libertarians for Ron Paul » 2007 » November

National Public Radio has a brief article on Ron Paul which includes this insight from Tucker Carlson:

Carlson calls Paul the most genuine, unpretentious candidate he has ever covered. Carlson says he’s also the most radical candidate in a long time. “Ron Paul really doesn’t think the government should be in charge of your life in any way,” he says. “He thinks every person ought to be free from government surveillance.”

“…it was the Republicans’ big-spending, big-government ways that helped ensure their defeat in the 2006 midterm elections. It wasn’t evangelical Christians or so-called “values voters” who deserted Republicans. Roughly 70 percent of white evangelicals and born-again Christians voted Republican in 2006, just a fraction less than in 2004.”

“It was suburbanites, independents, and others who were fed up not just with the war and corruption, but also with the Republican drift toward big-government who stayed home, or even voted Democratic, on election day 2006. That night, more than 65 percent of voters told a pollster they believed that “The Republicans used to be the party of economic growth, fiscal discipline, and limited government, but in recent years, too many Republicans in Washington have become just like the big spenders they used to oppose.”

Ludwig von Mises left Austria for Switzerland when the Nazi Party took power in Germany. He knew the Nazis would move into Austria soon. In 1940, Mises moved to America, and warned Americans about the Nazi menace.

In 1943, Mises wrote “Omnipotent Government” to alert Americans to the nature of National Socialism as a totalitarian movement, and to call for the defeat of the German war machine. The Ludwig von Mises Institute has posted the text of “Omnipotent Government online: http://www.mises.org/etexts/mises/og.asp

Congressman Ron Paul is Distinguished Counsellor to the Mises Institute, and has done more than any current candidate to expose the evils of National Socialism.

“It was one year ago this week that narcotics officers in Atlanta, Georgia broke into the home of 92-year-old Kathryn Johnston.”

“They had earlier arrested a man with a long rap sheet on drug charges. That man told the police officers that they’d find a large stash of cocaine in Johnston’s home. When police forced their way into Johnston’s home, she met them holding a rusty old revolver, fearing she was about to be robbed. The police opened fire, and killed her.”

“Shortly after the shooting, the police alleged that they had paid an informant to buy drugs from Ms. Johnston’s home. They said she fired at them first, and wounded two officers. And they alleged they found marijuana in her home.”

“We now know that these were all lies. In fact, everything about the Kathryn Johnston murder was corrupt.”

VoteVets.org is organized on behalf of US military veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts. VoteVets.org has invited the candidates for President to submit statements to their blog on issues relevant to US military veterans. Five Democrats have posted statements; Ron Paul has also posted his commitments to veteran’s concerns http://www.vetvoice.com/showDiary.do?diaryId=78

The leading Republican candidates have declined to post comments on this blog, because VoteVets.org has worked bring the troops home.

“Republican presidential candidate Fred Thompson may have set a modern record for the amount of sloppy thinking on defense policy in a single speech.  In remarks at the Citadel on Tuesday, Thompson proposed measures for a “revitalized” national defense.”

“The chief “pillar” of Thompson’s proposal is that the United States should not spend less than 4.5 percent of its gross domestic product on defense—not including the vast sums committed each year for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Another crucial pillar is that the U.S. should expand Army and Marine Corps to form a “million-member” force.”

“4.5 percent of GDP is an astonishingly large sum. The U.S. already spends as much on the military as the rest of the world combined, but even that vast outlay apparently does not satisfy Thompson and others who want to lavish more money on the Pentagon. Under his plan—and a similar scheme advanced by the Heritage Foundation earlier this year— the U.S. military budget would soar by nearly $100 billion. The total would approach $600 billion—plus at least another $150 billion for Iraq and Afghanistan. Worse, the 4.5 percent figure is a floor; the actual defense budget of a Thompson administration could be even more.”

Former Congressman Barry Goldwater,Jr has endorsed Rep. Ron Paul for President.

“America is at a crossroads,” said Mr. Goldwater. “We have begun to stray from our traditions and must get back to what has made us the greatest nation on earth or we will lose much of the freedom we hold dear. Ron Paul stands above all of the other candidates in his commitment to liberty and to America.”

Barry Goldwater,Jr is son of Sen. Barry Goldwater, Republican nominee for President in 1964 and long an icon to constitutional conservatives and libertarians.

“The Ron Paul campaign is exceptionally honored by Mr. Goldwater’s endorsement,” said Paul campaign manager Lew Moore.  “Dr. Paul and Congressman Goldwater fought together in the Congress for the ideals of limited constitutional government that Mr. Goldwater’s father so tirelessly advocated.  The Goldwaters have left an indelible mark on the Republican Party, and theirs is a legacy which Congressman Paul will certainly inherit as President.”

“In the name of clamping down on “terrorist uprisings” in Pakistan, General Musharraf has declared a state of emergency and imposed martial law. The true motivations behind this action however, are astonishingly transparent, as the reports come in that mainly lawyers and opposition party members are being arrested and harassed. Supreme Court justices are held in house arrest after indicating some reluctance to certify the legitimacy of Musharraf’s recent re-election.”

“Meanwhile, terrorist threats on US interests may be more likely to originate from Pakistan, a country to which we have sent $10 billion.”

“Hillary Clinton and her rivals for the Democratic presidential nomination are promising new domestic programs, tax cuts for the middle class and a return to balanced budgets. One problem: Their numbers don’t add up.”

“The top candidates, Clinton, Senator Barack Obama of Illinois and former Senator John Edwards of North Carolina, all propose more than $150 billion a year in tax breaks for middle- income earners and new federal spending on health care, energy and education. They also pledge “fiscal responsibility,” a phrase Clinton used seven times during an Oct. 30 debate.”
