Giuliani - 3
Brownback - 1
Ron was in attendance, along with Huckabee and Tancredo, who didn’t make much of an impression.

Ron Paul placed third in a straw poll sponsored by the Illinois Republican Party at the Illinois State Fair in Springfield. The straw poll was conducted on electronic voting machines from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 16. Final Results:
- Mitt Romney – 40.35%
- Fred Thompson – 19.96%
- Ron Paul – 18.87%
- Rudy Giuliani – 11.61%
- John McCain – 4.12%
- Mike Huckabee – 3.04%
- Sam Brownback – 1.08%
- Duncan Hunter - .65%
- Tom Tancredo - .33%
A top U.S. military officer in charge of co-ordinating the U.S. war effort in Iraq said yesterday that it makes sense to consider a return of the draft to meet the U.S. military’s needs.Lieutenant-General Douglas Lute, said the all-volunteer military is serving “exceedingly well” and the administration has not decided a draft is needed.
But in an interview with National Public Radio, he said, “I think it makes sense to certainly consider it, and I can tell you, this has always been an option on the table.”
Ron Paul warned us all of this possibility back in November but it never made the headlines.

Carol Paul, wife of Rep. Ron Paul, has undergone successful surgery to install a heart pacemaker. She is expected to make a full recovery.
Carol was hospitalized in Iowa on Saturday just before Ron’s appearance at the Ames Straw Poll.
In yesterday’s Iowa Independent:
Iowa Independent: Should you not win your party’s nomination, hypothetically speaking of course, would you consider running on the Libertarian ticket or as an independent?
Paul: I’m about 99.9 percent certain that the answer is no. If the movement and my support continues to steadily grow, and people are willing to stand out in the rain and campaign for me, I would have to keep moving on. I owe a great deal to these folks and they believe in the message, and I hope I succeed in being their messenger. (emphasis added)
